Adventure Teigmo Husky - Lavvu hotel

Huskyadventure 7 days

Accommodation
Safari lavvu and cabins: On our husky safaris you spend some nights in shared lavvu close to the main lavvu. Naturally, you will have access to all the Lavvu hotel’s facilities (sauna). The lavvu and sauna and provides the perfect atmosphere to bond with your fellow adventurers before setting off into the wilderness on your safari. You will eat all your meals in the main lavvu.

Wilderness cabins: On our wilderness safaris you will spend some nights in a wilderness cabin or cabins. Generally speaking the cabins are rather basic (no running water and very simple electric facilities) but comfortable and cosy, especially once dinner is cooking over the open fire. The cabins are usually so remote that there is little or no light pollution, creating the best possible chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis.

Your adventure starts on the evening on arrival when there will be a meeting with your guides who will introduce you to the region and brief you on the week ahead. The meeting is followed by dinner.

On the second day: After breakfast you will be provided with all the necessary equipment, including thermal clothing and then taken to meet the dogs. You will be taught how to handle your team and the sled and after lunch you depart into one of Europe's few remaining wilderness areas. The huskies will pull your sled through the beautiful winter scenery in Karasjok; the very capitol of the Norwegian sami people. You will pass through forests, across fells and over frozen lakes and rivers covering up to 40km per day. Only the “swish” of the sled's runners breaking through the snow will disturb the perfect silence and you very quickly realise that you have well and truly left behind the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Overnight stays are in simple but cosy wilderness cabins with no showers or indoor WC. Some of the cabins have their own electric power plants. However, you can relax in some style while dinner is cooking on an open fire and you may also have a sauna (must be booked ahead). Everybody takes care of their own dogs. Breakfasts and dinners are prepared together. Lunches are some times eaten by open fires on the trail. This far north there is a great chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis and with no light pollution whatsoever the night time sky may provide a picture show that will remain imprinted in your mind forever. Sometimes we have to drag people back into the cabins! After lunch on the last tourday , the final leg of your wilderness journey takes you back to the Lavvu hotel. In the evening there will be a farewell dinner.

With a team of husky dogs you will trek through the old growth forest, frozen lakes and swamps enjoying the peaceful tranquillity of nature and the exciting experience of dog sledding.

The landscape is favoured by wild animals like bear and elk. Our safari trail crosses these areas, and we also enter the reindeer husbandry area. The husky safari in this area allows you to discover the sights and sounds of northern winter, the dry cold of the snowy landscape of subtle colours and totally black sky with thousands of stars and with good luck, Northern Lights. You are driving a personal dog sledge pulled by a team of four or five Siberian or Alaskan huskies. Our local sled dog guide will be showing the way. All trips are self-supported, and no snowmachine transport gear and supplies. We carry what we need so please travel light. Some places we have depots of dogfood and wood.

Daily distances vary from 20 to 45 km. A general level of fitness will help you get the most out of this safari. Our guide will teach you how to drive the sledge and deal with your dogs. You and your dogs must work as a team. You will learn to harness the dogs and take care of them. After a day full of experiences it is nice to relax in a cosy and comfortable wilderness lodge having a sauna (must be ordered in advance-local fee)and dinner with traditional Sami dishes. The wilderness lodges were built for people travelling the ecological way in old days. All the accommodation has good facilities although it is wilderness style.
